Sunglasses are the ultimate warm-weather accessory. The right pair adds an air of mystery and instantly finishes your look, an ideal quick fix if you’re rushing out the door with no time for mascara. Such a wardrobe staple is often worth a hefty price tag, but these everyday essentials are also easy to lose and easy to break. Thankfully, whether you want to look glamorous, tough, casual-chic or fashion-forward, there are options available at every price point…if you know where to look.

Fashion lovers, consider this your guide to the sport of dressing. The playoffs are in full swing and die-hard Canadian hockey fanatics will pay tribute to their home teams year round. Jerseys and baseball caps are all fun, but let’s be honest – they lack a little bit of sartorial allure. Whether you are a true blue fan, or simply jumping aboard the bandwagon, you can show off your team spirit in style. Trade in your hockey paraphernalia for team colours to give new meaning to act of sport.

1. It’s no coincidence that the Vancouver Canucks are number one on my list. I’m rocking the blue and green while we make our way to the silver Stanley Cup!
ZARA Double Breasted Blazer ($119)
ZARA Skinny Stretch Jeans ($59.90)
Romygold Weave Hobo Bag, at Shopbop ($558)
ALDO Mezzani Flats ($70)

2. Hot for the Habs? Wear your blue and red with pride, my friends.
Nom De Plume by YaYa Cropped Tee, from Urban Outfitters ($44)
BDG Tricolour Shorts, from Urban Outfitters ($54)
Foley + Corinna Cross Body Clutch, at Shopbop ($239)
Converse All-Star Dance Shoes ($45)

3. Just because your team didn’t make the playoffs, doesn’t mean that you can’t show your true colours. Cheer on the Leafs with a little blue and white.
Romygold Tassel Clutch, from Shopbop ($395)
Splendid Stripe Cotton Tank, at Net-a-Porter ($78)
House of Dagmar Trousers, from Urban Outfitters ($328)
Jeffrey Campbell Flats, from Solestruck ($105)

4. Where does fire and ice meet? In Calgary, of course.
DKNY Leather Clutch, from Zappos ($185)
Topshop Skinny Zip Trousers ($76)
NTICE Cropped Fringe Tee, from Nasty Gal ($68)
Jeffrey Campbell Suede Platform Shoes, at Urban Outfitters ($128)

5. What do you get when you mix a little blue, orange, and white? Love for Edmonton.
ZARA V-Neck Sweater ($49.90)
Versace Tote, at Net-a-Porter ($1295)
ZARA Striped Skirt ($49.90)

My need to teeter on heels on a daily basis has led to a truly unhealthy obsession. In fact, I have toes that rival a ballerina dancers’. Thankfully, I can give my poor feet a break with the season’s latest “it” shoe: the loafer. The 2011 variations pack some serious punch with high fashion style, versatility, and of course, comfort. Pair loafers with everything from trousers and shorts to flirty dresses and drapey silhouettes. Check out a few of my favourite loafers for spring:

1. Go for an androgynous look with a classic loafer in a menswear-inspired shape with a touch of hardware. Stuart Weitzman loafers ($345), available at Browns Shoes.
2. Look for fun prints and tassel details for a unique look. My pick are these animal print moccasins from Zara ($39.99).
3, 4. Bright coloured loafers are a great way to add a pop of colour to your ensemble. Dolce Vita Marcela ($64.95) and Jeffrey Campbell Dunsmore ($124.95), available at Solestruck.
5, 6. Unique features like perforations and textured materials create a look that is spring and summer friendly. Aldo Eda penny loafers ($80) and New Kid Laser Cut Loafers ($149), from Urban Outfitters.

Spring has finally begun to show signs of life after what felt like an eternal winter. The warmer weather has us all dying to ditch our overcoats and scarves and don a new spring wardrobe. The only catch is that although the sun is shining and the days are longer, it is still a bit too chilly for some of spring’s lighter pieces.

What we can do, however, is throw one standout spring piece into the mix to revamp our winter style. We all tend to default to the same boring, albeit practical, winter looks after awhile. Adding some colour and lightness will not only brighten the spirits, but will also triple the amount of outfits you can get out of your wardrobe (and make dressing in the morning a lot more fun). Read on for two easy ways to get excited for spring while still staying warm!

1. Maxi Dresses

maxi

Though it’s too cold to go it alone in a maxi dress, if you throw on a little cropped jacket, a wool hat, and boots, you’ll be more than ready to face the cold while still looking spring-appropriate. To really create some edginess, pair a feminine dress with more masculine outerwear. The juxtaposition between the delicate dress and tougher jacket will give the whole look more appeal.

maxi outfit

Aldo boots, $99.98
Old Navy dress, $32.50
Mackage leather jacket (Aritzia), $575.00
Club Monaco fedora, $149.00

2. Shorts

shorts

As long as the rest of the outfit is winter-proofed, why not throw in some cute shorts in a lighter fabric? Score fashion bonus points with a pretty colour or pattern. Don’t forget to throw in some opaque black tights- we’re not quite in bare leg territory yet!

shorts outfit

Club Monaco coat, $129
Cooperative wedges (Urban Outfitters), $58.00
Pins and Needles shorts (Urban Outfitters), $54.00
Rag & Bone sweater (Holt Renfrew), $275.00
Rebecca Minkoff bag (Holt Renfrew), $195.00

I have a confession to make: I am a little afraid of colour. When it comes to daily dressing, I tend to reach for neutrals, saving the brights for special occasions. There’s a certain level of comfort and safety to be found in dark colours that prevents us from trying something new. Black is slimming and neutrals are versatile. If the spring runways could talk, though, they would scream for a lesson in colour theory. Vibrant hues and powdery pastels pack a bit of punch, offering up a fresh contrast to the soft nudes and whites of the season.

1. Style inspiration: Jil Sander Spring 2011. Photo courtesy of Style.com.
2. Nothing says spring more than sunshine yellow. BDG Cigarette High-Rise Jean ($58), at Urban Outfitters.
3. Darker shades like burgundy are a great way to wear colour if you aren’t quite ready to go bright. Isabel Marant Satin Twill Pants ($420), at Net-A-Porter.
4. A slim cut pant in a punchy colour is on point this season. Zara Skinny Studio Trousers ($59.90), at Zara stores.
5. Pair pastels whites for a clean, modern look. American Apparel High-Waist Pleated Pant ($82).
6. Powder pinks look great with nude tones this spring. James Jeans 5 Pocket Leggings ($145), at Shopbop.
7. My favourite pastel pants are these tapered trousers from 3.1 Phillip Lim ($375), from Shopbop.
