We believe in the gospel according to Coco, Cristobal and Christian (Chanel, Balenciaga and Dior, that is). So when the fashion gods call upon us to celebrate the new season, we gather in reverence to honour their gifts. Befitting the laws of fashion worship, Obakki presented its Fall 2011 Collection at Vancouver’s Saint Andrew’s-Wesley Church.

The dimmed setting set the tone for a dark and cryptic collection. Feminine draping and flowing silhouettes contrasted with restrained, body-conscious attire. Textures varied from fur-trimmed elements and heavy wools to soft silk layers. Painterly red slash-like prints and lace details lent to a gothic feel, while models walked the runway with disheveled fishtail braids, deep red lips and ghostly pale faces. Overall, Obakki demonstrated cohesive, wearable and beautiful pieces. Surely, it was a collection to preach about.

After ten years of pioneering the beauty boutique movement, it was officially time for Beautymark to celebrate their anniversary by moving into a bigger and better location. The unveiling happened last Wednesday, and it brought the fashion elite of Vancouver out in droves.

Now located at 1268 Pacific Blvd in Vancouver, The Cross-designed boutique is an impressive two-storied, expansive space. Though the location has changed, the boutique still continues to offer the best of the best in terms of beauty and styling products as well as some of the city’s best beauty and hair specialists. Owner Marc Brunet has cultivated an amazing team of specialists, including Chris Funk, the former style director of Blo Blow Dry Bar, nail artist Christina Culver, and more. Not only does the boutique sell beauty and hair products/services, but it also has a baby section and a well-curated collection of clothing and accessories.

Be sure to swing by the store yourself and check out the new space – you’ll undoubtedly find yourself walking away with something!

Jacqueline Conoir’s most recent fashion show proves that after 25 years in the industry, the label is going stronger than ever. Not only did designer RozeMerie Cuevas present the Jacqueline Conoir house label’s Fall/ Winter 2011 collection this past Tuesday, but in a surprise move she also unveiled Jac, a new collection filled with younger, trendier, everyday pieces.

Set against the backdrop of the Ferrari Maserati showroom, the show opened with looks from the Jacqueline Conoir F/W collection. It held true to the label with plenty of wonderfully tailored pieces. The structure and clean lines were offset beautifully by the inclusion of more delicate 70’s-esque silhouettes and patterns. A predominantly neutral palette was injected with sporadic shots of vibrant colour. The Bordeaux tinged skirt coupled with the fuscia silk blouse was definitely a standout. In a dramatic finale to the first half of the show, a series of draped black dresses with edgy mesh detailing marched ensemble down the runway.

An unaccompanied violin player bestowed a serene interlude upon the crowd before the Jac collection took to the runway. The collection featured pieces that were slightly more wearable and casual than their predecessors, but equally as chic. It was chockfull of layered knits, fun little dresses, playsuits and the most incredible slouchy pants (audible ooing and aahing filled the air as the pants came down the runway).

The crowd was as fabulous as the collection. Among the fashionable set in attendance was Rebecca Tay of Interactive for Aritzia, Joy Pecknold of FASHION, Stephanie Jahla of Obakki, and a sizeable group from the team at Flare. Everyone looked amazing and many of them payed tribute to the label by decking themselves out in their favourite Jacqueline Conoir pieces. No one could have asked for a better venue than the Ferrari Maserati showroom, either. It was not only spacious, but visually appealing as well: a rare find. All in all, definitely a night for the memory vault.

It’s time to banish the term “mini” from your skirt length vocabulary. Spring 2011 calls for a return to longer hemlines. Before you protest in fear of making matronly mistakes, you must learn the rules of modern maxi-ism. Bear in mind that appropriate shapes will vary with body type, and that styling is key when it comes to rocking midis and maxis. Look for styles that flatter your silhouette and fabrics that hang well. Modernize the look by pairing longer skirts with cropped sweaters and boots, or play up a midi-length with a crisp blouse, ankle socks and oxfords.

2. Minimalist maxis allow for ultimate styling versatility. Ella Moss Prima Donna Maxi Skirt (Approx. $100), available at Shopbop.

3, 7. Nothing says spring more than a maxi dress – just be sure to stay away from the “babydoll” variety. My picks are column-like silhouettes that flatter the body. Obakki Alsea Dress ($200) and Alice + Olivia Drapey Dress (Approx. $200), at Shopbop.

4. Tea length and midi skirts are the perfect alternative if you’re not quite ready to go the long distance. Lucca Couture Tea Length Skirt ($59), at Urban Outfitters.
5, 6. Look for skirts with unique textures and detailing, like draping and sheer panels. A side slit can also allow you to experiment with the look, like this Free People Striped Column Skirt (Approx. $78). Censored Maxi Skirt (Approx. $68), at Nasty Gal.
