Embrace winter this season with outdoor ice skating. If you’re lucky enough to live on the east coast, rinks typically open up around late November or early December, so be sure to fight the frost and show off your twirls without compromising your style. Dress in layers to stay comfortable no matter the temperature, and keep your outerwear waist-length for free range of movement. And don’t forget to pile on the knits to stay on-trend and cozy.

It turns out that the tragic Christmas gift you received from grandma last year is way cooler than you thought. The new fall/winter trend is about chunky sweaters in funky colours and patterns, as seen on the runways at Céline, Givenchy, Carven, Jil Sander, Joe Fresh and Proenza Schouler. Don’t be afraid to get a little quirky when it comes to your knits. Think bold, crazy prints, Fair Isle, animalia and bursts of colour for a look that keeps you warm and stylish when the weather is dark and dreary. For a flattering silhouette, pair your sweater with skinny jeans and your favourite cold weather booties.

Fall might be the fashion world’s favourite time of year. It’s not too cold that you have to sacrifice style for function, but there’s just enough chill in the air to justify a new coat. Colour blocking brights, mixed patterns, fur, and texture took center stage on the fall 2011 runways, so don’t be afraid to stray from basic black—there’s enough time for that once winter hits.

2. Joe Fresh Plaid Coat, $89
3. Forever 21 Toggle Button Jacket, $39
4. Anthropologie Sweeping Swing Coat, $498

Say goodbye to the chunky sweaters of this past winter and make room for the sultry, lightweight knits that are just right for spring. They’ll come in handy during these lingering cool temps and for all the indoor air conditioning ubiquitous in the depths of summer. This season’s knits are cozy but sheer and never bulky, with cropped, tissue-light styles and ultra-large weaves ideal for layering or showing a hint of skin.

1. Rag & Bone Open Knit Sweater, $275, available at net-a-porter.com
2. Cable Knit Sweater T, $82, available at American Apparel
3. Ruffle Cardigan, $29, available at Joe Fresh
4. Loose Knit Sweater, $64, available from Kensie
5. Kara Mesh Sweater Top, $148, available at BCBG Max Azria
6. Cropped Sweater, $85, available at Aritzia
