Rozemerie Cuevas is a veteran in the Canadian fashion scene who remains relevant with her stylish, sexy, yet wearable collections that have been embraced by women of every age. The very chic Miss Cuevas is the designer behind Vancouver based labels Jacqueline Conoir and Jac. Like two opposites that work together seamlessly, JC features classic silhouettes with a modern twist, while Jac is a collection that embraces street-inspired looks.

Fresh off her Spring 2012 presentation at her new flagship boutique in Vancouver, Rozemerie chats candidly about her designs and gives fashion lovers insight into working in the industry.

Valerie Tiu: Did you always want to pursue a career in the fashion industry?

Rozemerie Cuevas: Actually, I fell into it by accident. I was studying commerce and economics and I had always sewn my own clothes. When I was 18, someone suggested that I do a mini fashion show at Richards on Richards in Vancouver and it went very well. After that, I decided that I would become a fashion designer.

VT: You recently presented your Spring/Summer 2012 collections for Jacqueline Conoir and Jac. What were your key inspirations behind these lines?

RC: For Jacqueline Conoir, it was really about making women feel amazing and bringing the looks of the international runways to Vancouver. It was also very French Rivera–inspired, a lot of colour and flowy dresses. It’s a very free-spirited collection. Jac is really just everything that’s urban, streetwear, hip and cool. It’s very edgy.

VT: You have been designing for Jacqueline Conoir since 1985. How has your approach to design evolved over the years?

RC: Jacqueline Conoir has always remained true to its clients in that we’ve always designed for a sophisticated, modern, urban woman who is confident and isn’t afraid to be seen in a crowd. After many years of designing that collection I thought that I wanted to do something different. That’s where Jac came into play. We added this second collection and so that gives me a lot of creative input and it tests my design ability in a totally different realm. So it progressed from JC into Jac, and now we do both.

VT: What is the best piece of advice that you have received in your career?

RC: Never give up and never let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. Fashion is a very tough industry, so keep at it, be persistent, stay focused and just remember that you can’t please everyone.

VT: Style Nine to Five is all about fashion careers. What items from your latest collection would you recommend to wear for an interview or workplace?

RC: It really depends on the industry that you’re from. Let’s say that if you are in the corporate industry, we have a gorgeous brown summer boucle suit (from the JC line), where the dress has a silk inset around the bust area. I would recommend that – it’s just a great unique suit that portrays power, strength and individuality at the same time.

If you’re in the creative industry, we have this amazing blazer with a raised shoulder in the Jac line, worn with one of our edgy pants and a great t-shirt underneath.

VT: What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?

RC: Just surviving the fashion industry for 25 years is a huge accomplishment. Just to make a living out of it, enjoy it and be successful. Having a flagship store, and everything that has to do with being successful in the fashion industry.

VT: What is next for JC and Jac?

RC: The think the addition of Jac and the new flagship store has been a two-year long project. We’ve just completed that, so I am gathering my thoughts and figuring out the next step. The next step that we have slotted is to do online sales and to add to our flagship store.

VT: Do you have any words of wisdom for people aspiring to work in fashion?

RC: Think out of the box. Be creative and don’t do what everyone else is doing.

Jacqueline Conoir’s most recent fashion show proves that after 25 years in the industry, the label is going stronger than ever. Not only did designer RozeMerie Cuevas present the Jacqueline Conoir house label’s Fall/ Winter 2011 collection this past Tuesday, but in a surprise move she also unveiled Jac, a new collection filled with younger, trendier, everyday pieces.

Set against the backdrop of the Ferrari Maserati showroom, the show opened with looks from the Jacqueline Conoir F/W collection. It held true to the label with plenty of wonderfully tailored pieces. The structure and clean lines were offset beautifully by the inclusion of more delicate 70’s-esque silhouettes and patterns. A predominantly neutral palette was injected with sporadic shots of vibrant colour. The Bordeaux tinged skirt coupled with the fuscia silk blouse was definitely a standout. In a dramatic finale to the first half of the show, a series of draped black dresses with edgy mesh detailing marched ensemble down the runway.

An unaccompanied violin player bestowed a serene interlude upon the crowd before the Jac collection took to the runway. The collection featured pieces that were slightly more wearable and casual than their predecessors, but equally as chic. It was chockfull of layered knits, fun little dresses, playsuits and the most incredible slouchy pants (audible ooing and aahing filled the air as the pants came down the runway).

The crowd was as fabulous as the collection. Among the fashionable set in attendance was Rebecca Tay of Interactive for Aritzia, Joy Pecknold of FASHION, Stephanie Jahla of Obakki, and a sizeable group from the team at Flare. Everyone looked amazing and many of them payed tribute to the label by decking themselves out in their favourite Jacqueline Conoir pieces. No one could have asked for a better venue than the Ferrari Maserati showroom, either. It was not only spacious, but visually appealing as well: a rare find. All in all, definitely a night for the memory vault.

This season’s must-own pant is the harem. Effortlessly chic, comfortable and yes, flattering, it’s your new go-to piece for whatever occasion.

Look #1. Emily from JL Model Talent Management is in a perfect weekend look from Zara, shoes from Spring.

Look #2. Amy Sky is wearing Artizia harems in this season’s hottest hue, nude. Even a gal with curves can rock them!

Look #3. InspirationAll Talent and Modeling Group’s Paola is wearing a look from Nouvelle Nouvelle in Gastown. Love the pleated detailing and crop top. A great look for a night out.

Look #4. Victoria shows us that the mature woman can still wear harems in a head-to-toe look from the Jacqueline Conoir Collection available at JC Studio.

“Droopy”, drapey and drop-crotch? These three characteristics seem far from the ideal description of the perfect pant, even for the trendiest fashion fan. But with the focus on slim pants and leggings for the past few years, a newer and wider silhouette is a welcoming breath of fresh air (literally!). The new pant styles for the season are all about volume and a relaxed fit: very much a far cry from our beloved skinnies. Think harem pants, a touch of draping, pleats and wide leg trousers in light fabrics and looser fits.

Now I know what you’re probably thinking – “I could never pull this one off!” But au contraire mes amis! Going slack can truly suit anybody. The key to working this style of pant is finding the right variation to suit your body type. Remember that when working with looser silhouettes, it’s always best to contrast the look with a fitted top to flatter your figure. Finish with a pair of killer heels to elongate the legs. Now give me some slack!

1. These cropped pants from the Jacqueline Conoir Collection ($245) is a universally flattering style. Truly the perfect transition piece if you’re not quite ready to fully venture into the harem pant trend.

2. Want to stand out in a crowd while going slack? Try the silk satin harem pants from Little Moon by Wilfred, available at Aritzia stores in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver.

3. A high waisted pant balances out a pant with pleats and volume, while a rolled hem gives off a super casual vibe. Opt for this style by United Bamboo ($245), available at Lark in Vancouver and Rooney Shop in Montreal.

4. Pick up a pair of haute harems by Ella Peru ($80). The pleats are strategically placed, while the yoke at the bottom is perfectly flattering! Available at Planet Claire in Vancouver.

5. If you’re a curvy girl like me, look for harems with a high waistline and a tapered leg for a longer look. Opt for The Furies Pannung Pant from Urban Outfitters ($92).

6. A great alternative style is one with volume closer to the hem and a slimmer cut throughout. Try the wide leg pant with a draped hem by Obakki. Available at various Obakki stores nationwide and at the Obakki Online Store.

From floor-length frocks, barely-there backs and miniature hemlines to this season’s must-have high-waisted harem pants and embellished shoulders, it was a fashion show both on and off the runway at Vancouver label Jacqueline Conoir’s Fall 2010 preview at artist Pamela Masik’s studio. Here are my favourites from the collection and trendy eye treats from the crowd.
