With New Year’s Eve just around the corner, and boxing day sales on our side, a lot of us are on the hunt for the perfect evening dress! Sequins are a NYE go-to but if you’re feeling like trying something new, here are three other fun Fall/Winter trends as seen in the collections of some of my favourite local designers and boutiques.

Trend # 1 : LEOPARD

Vintage from Friperie Swing (151 ave des Pins East, Montreal). Vintage and second-hand is the best way to buy something fun without breaking the bank. Here are some other great boutiques to check out: Friperie Boheme (260 St-Viateur East, Montreal) and Local 23 ( 23 Bernard East, Montreal).

Trend # 2 : FRINGE
Denis Gagnon – Available at Reborn, in Old Montreal, and Holt Renfrew stores across Canada.

Trend # 3 : METALLIC

Mulcair – Available at Mulcair.com and boutique George and Jane (5364 St-Laurent, Montreal).

That perfect pair of jeans is a must-have for every wardrobe. My pick for Spring 2011 is Hudson by Georgia-May Jagger, aka the daughter of legendary style stars Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall. Now one of the world’s most sought-after models, Georgia-May was discovered by Hudson who launched her career in 2009 when they made her the face – and body – of their label. The genetically blessed progeny of rock ‘n roll meets glamour, Georgia-May personifies the denim brand’s transatlantic vibe, and is now designing her own line for Hudson. Featuring classic skinnies with bad-girl details like lace-ups and full-length zippers, this collection is sure to add some va-va-voom to your basic jeans and t-shirt look.

Available at Holt Renfrew locations across Canada.

The top four shoe trends for fall include the preppy/masculine style, clogs, ankle boots (peep-toe and lace-up) and OTK (over-the-knee) boots. All models are wearing the Silky Shirred Waist Skirt and Basic Rib Tank from American Apparel.

Thanks to InspirationALL Talent and Modeling Group and JK Models and to my assistant stylists Elim Chu and Valerie Tiu.

It’s a common problem for young women of a certain age: we covet high-end accessories that we come with matching high price-tags, and the ones we can actually afford tend to be mass produced, poor quality, and cheap. Where’s the middle ground? Well, ladies, our prayers have been answered. Zane Aburneh, founder of ATOZANE.com, has made it his mission to bring Canadian women “luxurious accessories that possess the quality craftsmanship and timelessness of designer brands with the artistry and affordability of independent, boutique labels.”

As a former handbag specialist at Holt Renfrew’s Bloor Street location, Aburneh knows a thing or two about accessories. “Style, functionality, and quality are the main factors I use before choosing any collection,” says Aburneh. “I also try to bring a unique and exclusive collection to the Canadian consumer through our own and international designers. I don’t carry overly trendy accessories because I believe that they are investment items and, if purchased correctly, don’t have to change from season to season like the fast changing trends of clothing.”

Currently dealing primarily in handbags, ATOZANE.com also carries socks, jewelry, belts, and bow ties. “I’m hoping to introduce different commodities of accessories as ATOZANE grows. I’m already looking at some amazing scarves, watches, and umbrellas for the upcoming seasons. You will start seeing a stronger Canadian presence on ATOZANE.com like Jenny Bird, Matt&Nat, and HoiBo.” Here are some of our faves, all available at www.atozane.com:

1. Great by Sandie Elona Patchwork Magic $599

2. Happy Socks $12

3. Hoi Bo Shoulder Tote $360

4. Modalu Cobana $225

5. Phuze Lilac Bling Ring $120
6. Tila March Zelig Tote $695

Beach Beauty

No matter what designer dress or killer heels you have on, if your skin and makeup aren’t looking just as good, neither will your clothes, no matter how fabulous! I can count far too often the times I’ve seen beautiful sandals ruined by unsightly feet, or a gorgeous dress turned catastrophe by a botched self-tanner job. Summertime can be dangerous territory for those non-beauty buffs out there. Self-tanners, bronzers, shimmery powders and lotions- great if done right, disaster if not. The key to most of these products is the less-is-more rule. You should be aiming for a light Summer glow, not aspiring to score a Jersey Shore audition. Super tanned skin, especially in combination with over-processed hair and too much makeup has long been considered gauche in the fashion world, and by the stylish population in general. So save your skin and your style this Summer and get a healthy, subtle glow with these Summer beauty favourites.

The Must Have:
Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer, $42. I have used this product for years, and year-round for that matter! It’s especially great for Summer though because of its lightweight, sheer coverage and SPF 20, keeping your skin moisturized and protected from the sun and heat. The new illuminating formula has a hint of shimmer for a dewy, radiant finish. One tube lasts me almost a year!

The Newcomers:
Laura Mercier Lotus Pink Second Skin Cheek Colour, $24.
Sephora makeup artist Stephanie Amenta says that customers have been going gaga for this new blush. The peachy-pink colour has gold highlights to give your cheeks a natural, warm glow.

Nars Orgasm Illuminator, $29.
The line’s Orgasm blush and lipgloss have been longstanding favourites with makeup artists and beauty junkies alike. Now that golden peachy glow is available in a shimmery gel-based complexion enhancer. Dab some on cheekbones, mix in with foundation or apply to your shoulders and collar bone for Summertime radiance!

The It-Lipstick:
Bright fuchsia and tangerine shades are Summer’s answer to the bold red lip. Apply shades like NARS Schiap ($24) or Chanel limited addition Rouge Allure Lip Colour in Genial ($30) for a fresh, modern look. Much like wearing a red lip, go light on eye makeup with these statement colours.

Bronzers:
The key to choosing a good bronzer is to stay away from anything with orange undertones or too much shimmer, and make sure to not pick a shade that’s too dark for your skin tone. I love NARS Bronzing Powder ($32) in Laguna for light- medium skin tones and Casino for medium- dark skin tones. Both have a subtle golden shimmer for a natural, sun-kissed look. Try Benefit Hoola Bronzing Powder ($28) for a more matte effect. Remember, only apply bronzer where the sun naturally hits your face- forehead, nose, temples and cheekbones.

Self-Tanners:
Both of my favourite tried and true self-tanners are not only natural looking and streak-free, but economical! I’m a big fan of Clinique’s Quick Bronze Tinted Self Tanner ($18.50) for the face. For the body I love Jergens Natural Glow Express Moisturizer ($8.99). Applied like a regular moisturizer, it’s streak proof, and the new Express formula not only gives results in a day or two but is also free of that funky smell that comes with so many self-tanners.

Shopping:

Benefit Bronzing Powder available at Sephora, The Bay and Shoppers Drug Mart stores across Canada.
