Socks and sandals? The unlikely combination seems to spark some serious debate in the fashion world, but with the seasonal shift to closed-toe footwear, we can all agree that socks and shoes are a definite style “do.” In fact, socks have taken over to become the “it” accessory of the season. Scrunch them up at the ankle, pull them high to the knee, layer with tights, and experiment with bold patterns and textures. Sport socks with brogues, jazz flats, booties and even a pair of pumps. Rock your socks with a few of my favourite picks:

1. Style inspiration from Mr. Tommy Ton. Photo courtesy of JAK & JIL.
2. Remember those ruffled, scalloped edge socks that you wore when you were six? They’re hip again – just be sure to mix them with killer heels for a grown-up look. Crochet anklet socks ($25) from Free People.
3. Wooly work socks are comfy, perfect for layering and look great with boots. HUE ribbed tweed boot socks ($6), available at Lori’s Shoes.
4, 5, 6. Experiment with textures, colour and patterns to add some pop to your ensemble. American Apparel sparkle-calf socks ($9), UO ankle socks ($8), Betsey Johnson rosebud crew socks ($14) from Urban Outfitters.
7. Get preppy with knee-high socks and loafers, à la Prada Fall 2010. Kate Spade crazy stripe knee highs ($18) at Zappos.
8. Thigh-highs are the hottest trend for sock lovers. Just be sure to balance the look with a knitted boyfriend sweater. Urban Outfitters ruffle top over the knee socks ($12).

Stuart Weitzman Clog at Brown's $418

The word clog may conjure up visions of little Dutch girls sporting braids and a pinafore or free-spirited hippies getting in the groove at Woodstock. If you’ve been paying any attention to recent runway trends however, you’ll notice that the clog has re-emerged as this season’s must-have shoe, and it’s had a makeover. The clog circa 2010 is a sleeker, studded, more modern breed than the ones of the past. The verdict is in: clogs are cool. Paired just as easily with a sundress as with jeans, the style will prove a versatile addition to your wardrobe. Look for modern updates like edgy hardware or studded detailing. Keeping them in a neutral tone will prevent them from appearing over-the-top, and you’ll also be playing into another huge trend this Spring, the nude shoe. Michael Kors, Miu Miu and Chanel all paired their Spring designs with clogs, and hey, if it’s good enough for Karl, I’m onboard.

Top to bottom: Aldo Nude Gualuski ($100), Jeffery Cambell for Free People ($150), Banana Republic ($120), Chanel (style.com)Aldo Cognac Finnell ($100), Stuart Weitzman from Browns ($418)

We’ve known for a while that matchy-matchy is passé in the fashion world. Designers took it a step further this season though by combining unexpected prints for a playful, fun take on Spring patterns. At first glance the unlikely combinations may strike you as a stylist’s handiwork gone terribly wrong. Polka dots with stripes you say? Florals and animal print? Never fear, there is a method to the madness. Rocking this look without appearing like you got dressed in the dark is all about size and colour. By keeping the different prints in the same colour palette and roughly the same size you will avoid clashing. Also make sure that your accessories are in solid neutrals to avoid any added distraction. This trend is not for the faint of heart, but fashion is all about experimentation, so go ahead and give it a try. We dare you.
