Fall might be the fashion world’s favourite time of year. It’s not too cold that you have to sacrifice style for function, but there’s just enough chill in the air to justify a new coat. Colour blocking brights, mixed patterns, fur, and texture took center stage on the fall 2011 runways, so don’t be afraid to stray from basic black—there’s enough time for that once winter hits.

Maybe it’s the Kate Middleton effect, but we’re in love with ladylike dressing. One way to get the prim and proper look is with lace, whether it’s a dress, top, or accessory. Lace pieces have an old-fashioned vintage appeal that’s ideal for work or play, as well as a bit of a naughty side. Pair it with something edgy (think leather, studs, or sultry colour schemes) to keep it from being too sweet, or go head-to-toe and embrace the duchess within.

2. J.Crew Heather Lace Mini, $86

Originating from traditional Japanese geisha attire, kimonos appeal to that hybrid between elegance and effortless bohemian. The kimono-style jacket is a great alternative to a cardigan or shawl, making it perfect as the summer days transition into fall. Mix and match a flowy topper with jeans, leggings, shorts or your go-to maxi dress for some eastern influence on any look. Spotted on celebrities such as Nicky Hilton and in designer collections such as L’Wren Scott, here are some kimono options you can add to you closet right now.

July has come and gone, but hopefully Mother Nature will be kind to us this month too. I’m not giving up on the warm weather just yet, and neither should you! Keep your summer glow inside and out with some affordable, key items that were trendy this season, but will transition nicely into September.

Leopard Flats

Try pairing these beauties with a crisp white dress, before Labor Day comes around. They also fit nicely with any solid color items, so as to not overpower the leopard print. BCBG Leopard Flats ($98)

Sequins

Sequins are the epitome of Hollywood glamour on a warm summer night. Come late September, pair it with tights and oxford heels, and you’re ready to take on the cold weather. Zara sequin skirt ($139)

Byzantine

The rich textures, colors and the solid gold adornments as seen on Chanel’s Fall 2011 runways, will transport you a different era, a time of Roman royalty. Forever 21 Necklace ($9.80)

Colorful Knits

Mix your darker tones with a bright sweater, wear it with shorts or transition it with trousers when the cold front hits. H&M Sweater ($24.95)
