Many of you are undoubtedly making getaways to sunny destinations to kick-start this return to summer. Though vacation-dressing can be pretty simple in theory (summer dress + sandals + sunglasses and you’re usually done), there’s no reason why you can’t up the ante and add a fashionable edge to your look either! Hollywood actress, model, and Chanel muse Diane Kruger is photographed here in St. Tropez last year at a Karl Lagerfeld-hosted bocce tournament. Though she’s still comfortable and entirely warm-weather appropriate, Diane manages to look exceptionally chic by paying attention to the little details in her outfit. As all the lovely ladies above demonstrate (including famed fashion bloggers Liz from Late Afternoon and Nicole from Gary Pepper Vintage, the most effective styling trick is to simply define the waist in some form or another. Since these skirts have slightly longer hems, wearing a cropped shirt or tucking in/belting your top really balances the proportions of the whole look. I took the easiest and most summer-appropriate approach and simply paired a fitted bustier with my Club Monaco Pamera skirt in lemon (that’s me in the last picture!).

What we can do, however, is throw one standout spring piece into the mix to revamp our winter style. We all tend to default to the same boring, albeit practical, winter looks after awhile. Adding some colour and lightness will not only brighten the spirits, but will also triple the amount of outfits you can get out of your wardrobe (and make dressing in the morning a lot more fun). 1. Maxi Dresses

Though it’s too cold to go it alone in a maxi dress, if you throw on a little cropped jacket, a wool hat, and boots, you’ll be more than ready to face the cold while still looking spring-appropriate. To really create some edginess, pair a feminine dress with more masculine outerwear. The juxtaposition between the delicate dress and tougher jacket will give the whole look more appeal.
