What do Twiggy, Edie Sedgwick and Foxy Brown (We’re talking Beyonce in her Austin Powers garb) have in common? Not only are they mod style icons but they can also work a killer frock!

The sixties are back this fall and it’s groovy baby! Think short straight-lined dresses, cute tunics, swing coats, minis and tall boots. Key elements are bold colours, geometric prints and big buttons. Don’t forget to complete the look with some over-the-top black eye makeup.

The times were all about being fun and fabulous. In our opinion, that kind of mentality should never go out of style! So let these looks inspire you to free your inner mod girl. You might even find yourself shimmying along to the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout”.

About two hours. This is approximately the amount of time it takes for me to get ready in the morning. But in my defense, us women have some serious decisions to make before we step out in public. Factoring in a wash, wardrobe and primping can lead to a time crunch. Luckily, my new obsession with dry shampoo and hair powders has helped me cut back on grooming time (I am now down to 1.5 hours – my roommates couldn’t be happier!). Dry shampoos can keep your hair looking fresh and easy to style. The best thing about new formulas is that most are specialized for every hair type and colour. Not mention, they smell great – making it perfect for days that you skip a wash. Check out a few of my favourites:

1. Bumble and Bumble’s hair powder (approximately $35) can be used to dry cleanse hair, enhance colour, boost volume and make it easy to style hair by adding some grip. What’s not to love? Available online and at various salons nation wide.
2. Some of the latest products spray on clear, so you don’t need to brush out any residue. Try the Oscar Blandi Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray ($23) from Sephora. I also love that it’s paraben and sulphate free!
3, 4. Need a to spruce up between events? Try a hair and body powder with a yummy scent. Principesspa Bianco Breeze Body Powder & Dry Shampoo ($24) from Beautymark and Cake Beauty Satin Sugar Refreshing Body & Hair Powder ($18), available online.

After ten years of pioneering the beauty boutique movement, it was officially time for Beautymark to celebrate their anniversary by moving into a bigger and better location. The unveiling happened last Wednesday, and it brought the fashion elite of Vancouver out in droves.

Now located at 1268 Pacific Blvd in Vancouver, The Cross-designed boutique is an impressive two-storied, expansive space. Though the location has changed, the boutique still continues to offer the best of the best in terms of beauty and styling products as well as some of the city’s best beauty and hair specialists. Owner Marc Brunet has cultivated an amazing team of specialists, including Chris Funk, the former style director of Blo Blow Dry Bar, nail artist Christina Culver, and more. Not only does the boutique sell beauty and hair products/services, but it also has a baby section and a well-curated collection of clothing and accessories.

Be sure to swing by the store yourself and check out the new space – you’ll undoubtedly find yourself walking away with something!

Call it a crusade for the single ladies – this year, I am banishing my woeful single Valentine’s Days of the past in lieu of a celebratory holiday for none other than myself. I am even going to insist upon calling it “V for VALERIE Day.” And how do I intend on marking such a commemorative occasion, you may ask? By indulging in the finer things in life, of course. This includes serious retail therapy, decadent treats and some R & R. No boys and no drama allowed!

1, 2. Paint the town red with some girly accessories. Aldo “Cyphert” Handbag ($45) and Jeffrey Campbell “Meeker” Booties (Approx. $160), at Solestruck.

3, 4. You don’t need a man to buy you jewellery – it’s all about you, baby! CC Skye “Femme Fatale” Earrings (Approx. $220) and Rachel Leigh “Fitz” Bangle (Approx. $200), available at Sophie’s Closet.

5. Indulge in a soothing bath with Booty Parlor’s Bath Kitten Kit ($59). This package even comes with a massaging mitt – the perfect way to relax. Available at Beautymark.

6. Unwind with a scented candle. My current favourite is the Library Collection by Paddywax ($25).

7. The only man you need on V-Day is Thomas Haas. Check out the Thomas Haas Patisserie-Chocolate and Cafes in Vancouver or shop online for delectable treats.

8. Girly lit and chick flicks are my guilty pleasures – minus the boy drama. I like my entertainment full of inspiring women and great fashion. Trade your copy of He’s Just Not That Into You for Jeanne Beker’s new book, Strutting It!, from Amazon.

Baby, it’s cold outside, and for many of us that means our beauty routines have gone awry. Never fear, Beautymark has a few solutions to ease the effects that cold weather can bring. Marc Brunet, owner of the Vancouver-based beauty emporium, shares some of his beauty tips.

Marc’s top 5 beauty must-haves for the winter season:

1. Rosebud Salve ($8). This multi purpose salve will save your skin this winter- whether it’s chapped lips, dry cuticles or taming that unruly brow!
2. A great moisturizer!  When the dry air and winter wind hit, why not use this opportunity to SHOP LOCAL with 3 great (Vancouver/Canadian based) moisturizers?  Linacare ($58 – pictured above), Riversol ($70) & Deserving Thyme ($22).
3. Feeling a little pale, especially after seeing tanned bodies on DWTS?  Avoid the tanning parlour with St. Tropez Self Tanning Products ($15 – $49.50).  Goof proof, no smell & #nottoosnooki!
4. Let’s face it, rain is in the forecast for us this winter. Oribe makes an anti-humidity spray called Impermeable (that’s French for raincoat!) ($43).
5. Color! Take advantage of the great colors this season, especially in the nail & lip department. Try rocking a fuchsia lip. The trend was all over the catwalks! Butter London Nail Lacquers ($17).

A brief bio on Beautymark:
In 2000, BeautyMark was born!  When we first opened our doors, people had never seen a boutique beauty store before. The brands we carried were so different – Philosophy, Fresh, Bumble and Bumble, Ole Henriksen, Anthony Logistics, Paula Dorf and Cargo. Many were tiny little brands, and in some cases, they were introduced to Canada by BeautyMark! Flash forward 10 years and now we have mass mall retailers and down market drugstores trying to catch a bit of the “gourmet” beauty action.  At BeautyMark we are not trying to be bigger, just better! We always offer cutting edge products, new and emerging brands and great customer service. It’s who we are and it’s a lot of fun!

All products are available online and at Beautymark in Yaletown, Vancouver.
