Here is the new rule in colour theory for 2011: clash it. Unconventional combinations of bright hues are on point for fall, not to mention, it’s a refreshing contrast in a sea of black. Think red and pink, orange and yellow, and blue and purple for a look that packs some serious punch. Not quite ready to go head-to-toe in technicolour? Try mismatching your brights with your bag and shoes.

It’s that time of year to show our love to the (figuratively) old man. While you’re marking June 19 on the calendar, think of all of the career counseling, boy advice and money for “groceries” dad has given you over the years. Can you really just get him socks again? No. Try spoiling him with some great treats that will inspire and update his look. With these Father’s Day favourites, dad is sure to become the most stylish man in Canada.

Okay so we’ve yet to join the ranks of the iPad army (those pennies are taking longer to save than expected!) but we’re hopeful it will happen soon. And you bet when that day comes we will be flaunting our tablets on the subway, on the patio, and at the dinner table. Obviously we will want to protect our investment without sacrificing style, so here are some cases that are just as impressive, if not even more desirable, than the gadget itself.

If you need one more reason to hit the gym this spring, it’s the comeback of the crop top. We all have good reason to be wary of this trend; however, current styles offer looser, free flowing shapes that are easy to wear and allow for layering. Cropped blouses look effortlessly cool when paired with high-waisted trousers, this season’s maxi skirt or worn on top of a fitted dress. Try a cropped top with a boyfriend blazer for a look that is a little more covered up, but still very sexy. No six-pack required.

1, 2. A clean, simple crop top with a boxy or loose fit looks effortless and chic. Look for textures that allow the garment to fall appropriately on the body. American Apparel Silk Loose Crop Tee (Approx. $45) and Free People Suede Crop Tank (Approx. $150).

3, 4. Cropped blouses in sheer fabrics allow for comfort and ultimate versatility. To make this style more day-appropriate, layer the blouse with a solid tank underneath. Switch to a bustier for a night out on the town. ASOS Chiffon Crop Top (Approx. $50) and Cheap Monday Tamara Top (Approx. $55), at Karmaloop.

5, 6. Unique features like fringe, lace, and back detailing give crop tops a modern feel. Topshop Crochet Fringe Crop Top (Approx. $60) and Ikat Print Crop Tee (Approx. $38), at Nasty Gal.

There is something oh-so refreshing about seventies style that appeals to the modern woman. Perhaps after recent years of all that was tight, short and studded, us fashion folk needed a breath of fresh air. Styles that evoke a seventies vibe offer a sense of freedom and liberation from our usually restrictive wardrobes. Think free-flowing dresses, loose draping, fuller, longer silhouettes and of course, killer platform heels to complete the look.

2. Go seventies boho chic with a classic floppy felt topper. Catarzi hat (Approx. $50) at ASOS.
3. Make like Lennon with a classic pair of round shades. Oliver Peoples Iconic Riley Sunglasses ($385).
4. Finish your seventies ensemble with a great pair of platform heels – perfect for the upcoming season! Dolce Vita The Jade ($180) at Solestruck.

5. A sheer blouse is super easy to wear. Just tuck it into a comfy pair of wide leg trousers for a retro-cool look. Pins and Needles Chiffon Tunic ($59), available at Urban Outfitters.

6. Channel a seventies goddess with long silhouettes, like maxi dresses and one-piece suits a la Halston. Mink Pink Maxi Dress ($105), at Revolve Clothing.

7. Don’t let the terms “flared” and “bell-bottom” scare you. High-waisted, wide leg bottoms are the new must-have pants that you will be living in this year. Current/Elliot High Rise Bell Flared Jeans ($219), at Net-a-Porter.
