Sequined vests, chic capes and faux fur coats- just a few of our favourite things from Jeanne Beker’s newly launched line Edit. Local media joined the fashion maven and FT powerhouse at The Bay last week to hear her speak on the label’s conception and aesthetic. The collection consists of bold, streamlined key pieces Jeanne deems as essential in any woman’s wardrobe and that can be easily mixed and matched. When I got the chance to ask the industry icon who the “Edit girl” is, she exclaimed with her trademark vivacity, “Me!” Through a playful laugh Beker went on to cite the everyday woman who has a busy life and a love of fashion as the kind of gal she would like to see sporting Edit. Real bodies, real lifestyles and real attitude were the order of the day.

Her energy and passion for the industry resonated with everyone as she answered audience questions and gave admiring fans tips on working in the industry. While reminiscing about the daunting prospect of her first “big” interview with 70s heartthrob Rod Stewart, Jeanne said she put her parent’s words of wisdom to use: “Be brave. Don’t give up.” With a long career of interviewing fashion heavyweights like Karl Lagerfeld and Jean Paul Gaultier (two of her favourite personalities) and sitting front row at the world’s most sought after runway shows, I’d say they’re words to live by.

Vancouver’s Water Street hosted the ultimate in chic recently as Obakki presented their Spring/Summer 2011 Collection. Ethereal, flowing dresses, breezy silhouettes, painterly prints and a touch of minimalism were key elements in the collection. Designer Treana Peake maintained her signature rocker-chic aesthetic as models strutted the catwalk sporting disheveled do’s and black smoky eyes. Obakki owned it with the look of the evening – a simple, sheer bat-wing dress.

Vancouver is a green city, but don’t let all the mountain bikes and Birkenstocks con you into believing that us Earth-lovers get decked out in granola-garb. Luckily, Eco Fashion Week in our city has proven otherwise. With a mandate to inform the public about responsibility and sustainability in fashion, EFW recently presented top eco-fashion designers from all over North America.

I had the pleasure of attending night two of EFW, with Vancouver’s own Red Jade, Peridot Kiss, Lara Presber and a personal favourite, Nicole Bridger. Expert draping, impeccable tailoring, unique shapes and attention to details made every collection definitive of true fashion. Seeing so many talented artists and great people behind EFW was inspiring – a step towards sustainable style.

Long, short, thin, curvy, big and small – women come in all shapes and sizes, but for most of us with real bodies, it’s difficult to find clothing that fashionably fits. Jason Matlo is one of those few fashion designers that truly know a woman’s body. I am always amazed at the creations that Mr. Matlo designs– each piece is luxurious, beautifully constructed and simply timeless. Each piece truly makes the women who wear them look confident and sexy.

I recently had the pleasure of attending Jason Matlo’s Autumn/Winter 2010 Trunk Show at Ishara in Gastown, Vancouver. The latest offerings from the Vancouver-based designer did not disappoint. Both the Jason Matlo Collection and his diffusion line, Babe, showcased ultra feminine silhouettes with his signature flair – a pop of colour, dramatic detail and the overall look of beautiful elegance.
Jason Matlo is available at Ishara (38 Water St. Vancouver) and select boutiques in North America.

Eco-fashion fans are true lovers. When it comes to giving back to the planet, we go all out – especially when it involves shopping the night away. Eco-conscious stylistas recently united at Vancouver’s Body Politic for Eco Shops for a Cause, a shopping event to support the David Suzuki Foundation. With some of North America’s most chic sustainable fashions, including labels Noir Bonbon, Nicole Bridger and Lara Miller, it was difficult to resist my shopping temptations.

The night also marked the Canadian debut of Dutzi Designs (above), a line of handcrafted handbags that supports entrepreneurship for women in Mexico.

Munching on mini cupcakes and wine (all organic, of course!), I was happy to be amongst some of Vancouver’s most stylish. Vintage jumpsuits, 50’s throwback styles and bold pops of colour were a few of my favourite style spottings of the evening.

Body Politic is located at 208 E 12th Ave at Main, Vancouver.

1. Gorgeous ladies! Cyndi Hunter of Silver Spoon Food Tours, Regina Noppe of Green Sapphire Imports, Kristin Janishefski of Vanguard PR, and Niki Blasina of A Haute Mess.

2. Nicole Ritchie-Oseen, Owner at Body Politic and friend Jenna.

3. Fashion Designer Nicole Bridger.

4. Britney Rae-Douglas, Shoe Buyer at John Fluevog, gives Fall 2010 a test drive with brand new stock from the store. Love the silhouette and draping of this Noir Bonbon dress!
5. Accessories are my weakness, and these bold pieces are no exception. The necklace by Green Sapphire Imports would be the perfect addition to any outfit.

7. Kathy Nguyen, Assistant Editor at String Magazine.
